Kentucky's Bioptic Driving Program Frequently Asked Questions

​​​What are the visual requirements for the Bioptic Program?

  • Your visual acuities must be 20/200, or better, in one eye, and you must beable to see at least 20/60, or better, through the Bioptic telescopic lens.
  • The horizontal field of vision must be at least 120 degrees, and the verticalfield of vision must be at least 80 degrees.
  • Your vision must be stable for at least 12 months.

​What are the costs of participation and equipment for the Bioptic Program?

  • The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation provides Bioptic driving evaluationand training to individuals determined eligible for services.
    • Cost-sharing may be required for equipment.
  • An individual not eligible for vocational rehabilitation services or those loweron the priority list for services may choose to participate in a private trainingprogram on a fee-for-service basis.
    • The cost for private training is determined by the provider. Estimatesof this service are around $125 per hour for behind-the-wheel training.
      • There may also be travel expenses if the trainer is not located in your area.
    • The Bioptic telescopic device may range from $1,000 to $3,500.
    • Depending on the visual condition, sunshields may be required. Thecost can range from $20 to $200. You may require multiplesunshields.

How is a Driver’s Permit obtained?

Upon successful completion of a clinical and in car spotting evaluation, youwill be presented with a permit letter. You will present this letter to yourRegional Driver’s License Office, and it will exempt you from taking the visiontest when applying for your permit. You must take the written exam whichcovers the road signs and rules of the road.

How long does the process take to become a licensed Bioptic Driver?

  • It can take several months to several years from the initial clinical evaluationto the time you start behind-the-wheel training.
  • The minimum behind-the-wheel training is 30 hours for new drivers and 15hours for experienced drivers.
  • The waiting time for services depends on the Order of Priority outlined below.
    • Potential trainees in jeopardy of losing their employment.
    • Potential trainees that have completed their VR training and are readyfor employment.
    • Potential trainees that are having difficulty getting to and from their place of training/education.
    • All other potential trainees.

Will I be approved to drive at night?

  • You must receive approval from your Eye Doctor.
  • You must successfully pass an in-car evaluation and training.
  • You must pass a Bioptic Driving Skills Road Test, at night, administered by the Kentucky State Police.

Am I required to provide my own vehicle for the training?

No, the trainer will provide a training vehicle.

What information is required to obtain car insurance?

  • The same information as other drivers seeking to obtain car insurance and based on the policy and procedure of the insurance company you are doing business with.
  • You cannot be charged more than anyone else because you are a Bioptic driver, and you do not have to disclose to your insurance company that you are a Bioptic driver.

What are my responsibilities after successfully completing the program and becoming a licensed Bioptic Driver?

Once you complete the process and are a licensed Bioptic Driver, there are requirements to maintaining your Bioptic Operator’s License. This information will be covered at the completion of the program and continuing licensing requires specific documentation to maintain a valid license.
